Les deux dernières, à  l'occasion de la sortie d'un duo de Magda Mayas et Anthea Caddy et d'un  solo d'Olaf Rupp, toutes uniques et différentes, sont composées de  matériaux divers comme des morceaux de cuir ou une membrane d'encre de  Chine par exemple. Trois pièces donc  où se superposent des textures nouvelles et des timbres originaux, la  palette de sons est très large et forme comme une série de tableaux  sonores minimalistes où se succèdent des couleurs qui diffèrent selon la  dynamique. La plupart du temps, on reconnaît encore les instruments,  mais la fusion est quand même si bien réussie entre les deux musiciennes  qu'on a du mal à simplement souhaiter les distinguer. En fait, la  distinction est possible dans la mesure où le duo Caddy/Mayas fusionne  uniquement au niveau de la dynamique, tout en produisant des textures  différentes, ou même opposées.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Trois pièces denses et riches, aux couleurs singulières et atypiques  d'où surgissent toujours des dynamiques communes malgré l'opposition de  timbres et de modes de jeu (ostinato contre bourdon, rythmique contre  lisse, bruits contre notes). Je disais avoir eu la sensation d'entendre grouiller une nuée  d'insectes, et en écoutant ce solo d'Olaf Rupp, je comprends maintenant  que cette sensation venait principalement de ce guitariste. &lt;i&gt;AuldLangSyne &lt;/i&gt;est  une suite de neuf improvisations pour guitares acoustique et électrique  selon les morceaux. Une suite très dense faite de clusters, d'une  succession et d'une superposition de notes à une vitesse supersonique,  notes séparées par des écarts vertigineux. Olaf Rupp ne rigole pas, les  notes sont piquées et pincées, elles s'entremêlent avant même d'avoir eu  le temps de résonner, on imagine facilement le front du guitariste en  nage et les doigts en sang. Une technique de jeu virtuose et  impressionnante certes, sauf que l'énergie maximale et hyperactive  toujours déployée finit par lasser, la vitesse hystérique fatigue, tout  comme l'absence de respiration et de relief.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pas réussi à véritablement accroché malgré la singularité et la  véritable fraicheur de la sonorité de Rupp. Trop monotone et plat à mon  goût, &lt;i&gt;AuldLangSyne&lt;/i&gt; m'a vite lassé et fatigué. Ceci-dit, les  peintures sur cuir signées Antonio Peppe sont vraiment belles et ce  mélange de gris et de noir urbains reflète plutôt bien l'atmosphère d'&lt;i&gt;AuldLangSyne&lt;/i&gt; durant cette heure d'improvisation sur guitare verticale. Guitarist  Olaf Rupp's &lt;em&gt;AuldLangSyne &lt;/em&gt;is   housed in a large irregular hexagonal sleeve with a front cover   painting by Antonio  Poppe and leather back cover, and each copy  includes a different  Poppe engraving. Access  to contents is via a slit  in the leather just long enough to get a CD  through. S&lt;em&gt;chatten&lt;/em&gt;,   by pianist Magda Mayas and cellist Anthea Caddy, comes in a tactile   rich blue membrane made of ink skin designed by Nádia Duvall. And  Rupp,  Mayas and Caddy ensure the quality of the music is commensurate  with  its packaging.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/h5&gt;           &lt;h5 class="style4" align="JUSTIFY"&gt;&lt;span lang="en-GB"&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.paristransatlantic.com/magazine/monthly2011/12rupp.jpg" align="left" height="163" width="120" /&gt;AuldLangSyne'&lt;/em&gt;s  nine tracks&lt;/span&gt; &lt;span lang="en-GB"&gt;run   for just over an hour and were recorded by Rupp in Berlin in 2010.   Although a frequent and successful collaborator, he's arguably at his   best playing solo, on both acoustic and electric guitar, and  maintains a  cracking pace, even when playing comparatively simply and  deliberately  as at the start of the opening track "Every"  (the track titles form  the phrase "every dog has his day and a  good dog just might have two  days"). On acoustic guitar, the  musical tumult includes rapidly  strummed chords and arpeggios  interwoven with harmonic and melodic  strands, while sections of the  longest track, "His", are highly  reminiscent of flamenco.  On the electric instrument, notably on "Day",  the technique  is similar, but bent notes, sustain and variations in  volume add  variety. Rupp's brain works as fast as his fingers, and he  plays with  impressive precision even at the fastest of tempi, but the  music  never sounds like mere technical display: each piece is unique  and  all are equally satisfying.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/h5&gt;           &lt;h5 class="style4" align="JUSTIFY" lang="en-GB"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.paristransatlantic.com/magazine/monthly2011/12mayas.jpg" align="right" height="120" width="120" /&gt;&lt;span lang="en-GB"&gt;&lt;em&gt;Schatten &lt;/em&gt;was   recorded at Amann Studios, Vienna, in March 2010. Pianist Magda Mayas   is such a strong individual stylist that it sometimes feels as if   she's dominating her playing partners (as was the case on the recent   Great Waitress album &lt;em&gt;Lucid &lt;/em&gt;(Splitrec)  with &lt;/span&gt;accordionist  Monika Brooks and clarinettist Laura Altman),&lt;span lang="en-GB"&gt; but with cellist Anthea Caddy it's a partnership of well-matched  equals. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="en-GB"&gt;As   always, Mayas plays the whole instrument, producing sounds that are   recognisably piano along with others made by banging and scraping the   frame or the strings. In similar fashion, Caddy produces an  impressive  array of sounds from the deepest darkest arco tones to  high pitched  screeches. Both musicians are adept at adjusting and  evolving pitch,  tempo and timbre, sometimes contrasting completely  with one another,  sometimes both going in the same direction, as in  the ominously dark  and moody rumblings halfway through the opening  track. Dromos releases have always arrived in innovative  packaging, but this one might be my favourite yet, with each of the 250  copies being packed in handmade splodges of blue crépe paper and wax,  each one individual and somehow simultaneously&lt;span id="more-6388"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;  very ugly and quite beautiful. The disc within contains three  beautifully recorded studio tracks of dense textural improvisation. The  general feel is one that falls neatly midway between the various poles  of improvisation’s current trends. It is always very active and  energetic, perhaps even aggressively so here and there, but while  silence plays little to no part in the music it also doesn’t feel  unnecessarily chattery. The thickness of the sound, which is all  acoustically created, is down to the way the musicians work here to  build looming clouds of sound rather than itchy, scratchy conversations.  Mayas’ playing is more percussive than melodic, working in and around  the body of the prepared instrument as well as bowing, tapping and  plucking at the strings. Often her sound is deeply resonant. Rolling,  booming shudders of low register  sound match lighter plucks and tones  moment for moment. Caddy’s cello varies in intensity as well, often  flourishing into extremely wild, wrenching sections of bowing match up  to Mayas’ more violently hammering moments just as the delicacy the  cello also comes through at other times. &lt;p&gt;The album is named &lt;em&gt;Schatten&lt;/em&gt;, which translates (I think) to &lt;em&gt;Shade&lt;/em&gt;-  a quite fitting title given the frequently dark, claustrophobic feeling  to the music. The musicianship involved here, highlighted in the way  the two instruments feed off of one another and respond to one another  rather than merely sit adjacent underlines the improvised music  traditions at work here, but this CD stands for me as another good  example of a currently very interesting area in improv right now- music  that focusses texture and carefully chosen sounds but often does so in a  talkative, far from reductionist manner, with every sound mattering,   nothing there without good reason but also with no fear of making  openly expressive music. The heaving, muscular interchanges of bowed  strings and thunderous hammering piano that rise up throughout&lt;em&gt; In the shadows lay&lt;/em&gt;,  the second track here are particularly wonderful, stirring up this old  listener for sure, making the hairs stand on end as the music almost  abuses the careful listener.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The mix of the delicate and fragile with the dense and heavy is  reflected in the CD’s packaging as the thin whispering crepe paper is  enveloped in the thick, gloopy wax. That sensation of some kind of  oppressive force weighing down on the music, pushing it away from the  simply tasteful and into more uncomfortable, yet ultimately rewarding  areas remain present throughout what is a really very engaging album  indeed. At times this music gets extremely urgent, even angrily so here  and there, and right now I can empathise with such an approach.  Listening here tonight, letting the urgency of the music unravel around  me in an almost violent way felt a little cathartic. For all the beauty  of life and the people we meet along the way there are always dark,  uncomfortable moments, and sometimes music helps us sort such occasions  out. Tendo em conta a disparidade aparente entre os dois músicos, &lt;i&gt;All For Now&lt;/i&gt;  é um documento impressionante no modo como duas linguagens distintas se  enredaram tão naturalmente no processo. Disco criado da cumplicidade  entre os dois músicos, tem a seu favor o facto de conseguir com notória  despretensão erigir momentos de comunicação sem desprimorar todo o apuro  formal patente nos seus currículos. Com esse carácter espelhado em  nomes como “For Preservationists to Get Off on Later...Posthumously” ou  “Drum Set. Or... ...Because...The Museum Will Act Like...Huh?” apresenta  16 malhas relativamente curtas de improvisação lírica. O piano de  Thollem em tangentes devedoras do free jazz a alguma música  contemporânea vai encontrado as linhas de guitarra oblíquas de Dieterich  em construções sóbrias de um rigor melódico intrigante. Sem forçar  tácticas desconstrutivistas, confere igual protagonimo as ambas as  partes, num todo de elegante coerência que peca apenas por algumas  miniaturas algo inconsequentes na sua irresolução. Com um sucinto nome a sugestionar de forma assertiva aquilo que têm vindo a fazer, &lt;i&gt;Caustic Gate&lt;/i&gt;  é uma terra de ninguém que escapa ao free jazz com recurso a uma  manipulação extremada das potencialidades dos dois instrumentos ao ponto  do não reconhecimento. Sem forçar comparações inusitadas, poder-se-á  encontrar um presciente ideológico na totalidade dos Borbetomagus  filtrada pelas tácticas noise características de alguém como o John  Wiese ou Aaron Dilloway. “Collision Cleansed” descreve arcos de  distorção feérica assentes no duelo possível entre os dois músicos que  nunca cede ao militantismo de chamada-resposta. Antes na subjugação do  som ao seu limite visceral até um final sem vencedores. Adaptando uma  narrativa, pode-se pensar numa guerra que descamba no ambiente desolador  de “Current Residue”. Com os sopros a assumirem a criação de um drone  povoado por &lt;i&gt;war cries&lt;/i&gt; sibilinos que nunca sucumbe na sua maior  rarefacção. Nem à contemplação letárgica. Antes na perpetuação durante  15 minutos de uma mesma terra de ninguém por uma via eminentemente mais  plácida. “Erosive States” condensa em cerca de quatro minutos todos os  elementos mais ruidosos do duo até ao ponto de ruptura do feedback. Partindo das premissas base  da House de Chicago como profetizada por Phuture, para recolher os  destroços mais lúdicos de algum Krautrock, do som de Colónia (e  relembrar como os Mouse On Mars são incríveis) ou de alguma Micro-House  na linha de Farben, para chegar àquele ponto de mutação fractal que tem  nos Black Dice pós-&lt;i&gt;Creature Comfort&lt;/i&gt; ou nos Excepter circa &lt;i&gt;Self Destruction&lt;/i&gt;  referências subliminares. Disco com vista panorâmica sobre a boa onda  total, assenta numa metodologia insinuante que adapta todas essas  linguagens sem as impor descaradamente. Numa lógica interna que dispõe  nuances melódicas e rítmicas evitando uma organização mais estrita para  assumir essa instabilidade de processos como um fim em si mesmo. Que  tanto pode passar pelo escapismo mental como pela dança possível. Há  toda uma noção de risco ao longo destas seis malhas, brilhantemente  conduzido pelas mãos de António, Alberto e Sara, num plano continuamente  intrigante que nunca resvala para o experimentalismo inócuo. Paira  sobre tudo isto uma vibração bem tropical de dimensão psicadélica que um  nome como “Travesti + Palmeiras AV” vem sugestionar, com os rasgos de  voz iluminados pelo delay a darem razão ao pressuposto. “E-Muzik” tanto  poderia ser o nome de uma música dos Harmonia como reaproveita as lições  deixadas por “Watussi” para bom efeito. “Balão” fecha o disco sob uma  manta de teclados líquidos que faz da praia um estado mental, numa  estreia notável de um dos nomes mais singulares do agora. Este é  um deles.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Percorrido por uma base de idioma house – algumas recordações de&lt;strong&gt; Larry Heard&lt;/strong&gt; (Mr. Fingers) ou &lt;strong&gt;Phuture &lt;/strong&gt;não são propriamente vãs – que se reescreve em linguagens que tanto roçam o experimentalismo de &lt;strong&gt;Arthur Russell&lt;/strong&gt;, o pioneirismo electrónico de &lt;strong&gt;Edgar Froese&lt;/strong&gt; (Tangerine Dream) ou até mesmo a vanguarda &lt;em&gt;eighties&lt;/em&gt; dos &lt;strong&gt;The Art Of Noise&lt;/strong&gt;.  É um trabalho fresco, jovem, reúne gramáticas musicais diversas que o  ilibam de qualquer pretensiosismo estético e, mutuamente, lhe conferem o  cunho da originalidade.&lt;span id="more-19086"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;“&lt;em&gt;Passou-se da matéria-forma à matéria-energia&lt;/em&gt;”  (Giles Deleuze): é exactamente esta transformação material que se  propaga pelas seis faixas em que o som samplado, em forma de gradação,  avança em cursos dinâmicos de ataque e decaimento, reparando-se  facilmente na vontade de revelar mais e diferenciados timbres. Contudo,  não deixa de haver um carácter discreto, e por vezes até minimal, no  suporte de cada música.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Logo na primeira faixa &lt;em&gt;Travesti + Palmeiras AV&lt;/em&gt;, com um apoio  rítmico repetitivo, é posta em prática uma sequência inesperada –  vozes, desvios psicadélicos, simulações de novos diálogos – sem,  todavia, se criarem contrastes ao ponto de se perder a direcção. Existe  uma qualquer brincadeira criativa em que se intersecta o presente e o  passado, sendo que o “agora” se estrutura pelo passado mais recente,  conferindo-lhe uma sucessão sonora munida de sentido.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Este trabalho, que conjuga espectros sonoros das discotecas de  Chicago dos finais dos anos ’80 com o experimental da década anterior, é  fruto da audácia lisboeta do António, do Alberto e da Sara. Porém, não é  só a ousadia timbrada que passa pelo primeiro EP dos&lt;a href="http://www.myspace.com/niagaraaragain" target="_blank"&gt; &lt;strong&gt;Niagara&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/a&gt;:  numa edição limitada de 100 cópias, cada uma é dona de um design  exclusivo criado pela artista plástica norte-americana Natalie  Westbrook.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Como se não bastasse, a ambiciosa &lt;a href="http://dromosrecords.com/"&gt;Dromos Recordings&lt;/a&gt;,  constituída apenas pelos amigos João e Pedro, que viu o seu primeiro  fruto surgir no Verão de 2009, é a “cara” ávida por contribuir que se  esconde atrás deste projecto admirável. Still, I have listened to some music today,  and have chosen to write about a disc that actually came out more than a  year ago, and was sent to me a month or two back, but as I have only  just got around to playing it, and as the label were kind enough to  think of me to send it, I don’t see why it should matter how long its  been out. it is still available &lt;a href="http://www.dromosrecords.com/catalogue.php?id=1" target="_blank"&gt;here.&lt;/a&gt; &lt;p&gt;The CD in question then, is a trio improvisation  recorded in  Argentina back in 2008 by the trio of Tetuzi Akiyama, (acoustic guitar)  Eden Carrasco (alto sax) and Leonel Kaplan (trumpet). The album consists  of one thirty-three minute long improvisation and revels in the  beautiful title &lt;em&gt;Moments of Falling Petals. &lt;/em&gt;Before mentioning  the music I should bring attention to the lovingly formed packaging, a  great little pen drawing printed on thick art paper that is then folded  up in such an extravagant origami formation that I’m not sure I’ll be  able to put the disc away once I’ve finished with it this evening.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;So musically, this piece sounds pretty much how I expected it to,  Akiyama picking out a spacious, fragmented blues-type smattering of  clear notes over Kaplan and Carrasco’s more muted, earthy backdrops. As  predictable as it may be though, it is still really rather lovely. The  sax and trumpet stay mostly in an area somewhere between breathy hisses  and low growls, occasionally breaking out into louder passages of the  same kind of thing, but retaining the reduced palette throughout.  Akiyama’s playing then is very beautiful, indeed like falling petals his  notes feel fragile and exposed out the front, like the first solid  lines painted into a watercolour sketch after the bases washes have been  perfected. The rhythmic element that often creeps into Akiyama’s  playing is missing here though, which pleases me quite a bit, and so  there is a  forlorn, almost vulnerable feel to the guitar that harks  back to his early CDs and yet also fits here perfectly.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;An understated affair then, but with a romantic heart, which makes  this quite a rare improv disc as it seeps a kind of sadness of the kind  we usually hear in other forms of music but rarely in the improv world.  There is plenty of silence in there as well, particularly in the CD’s  opening few minutes as the musicians find their place in the live event,  so all of this combined together gives the CD a certain poignancy. The  role of the two Argentinian musicians shouldn’t be underplayed here  either. Ou seja, António,  Alberto e Sara, um trio de Lisboa que propõe seis temas de esqueleto  sonoro simples e minimalista, mas que acredita em pequenos  reajustamentos, desvios do caminho principal, acidentes não previstos.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Não é propriamente música para dançar apesar de se poder dançar,  desde que exista algum sentido de equilíbrio. Em Portugal não existem  propriamente pontos de contacto que os ajudem a enquadrar, embora na  atitude livre com que encaram a matéria sonora se possam encontrar  analogias com algumas aventuras recentes da música de características  electrónicas feita em Portugal, como os Gala Drop, Tiago, Slight Delay  ou Photonz.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Mesmo quando o olhar se amplia para o mundo não é fácil  posicioná-los. Pode pensar-se nos desvios mais exploratórios de Akufen,  Herbert, Matmos ou Jan Jelinek, mas mesmo assim escapa qualquer coisa.  São tão marcados pela música house dos primórdios, como pelo rock alemão  nada convencional dos anos 70, simbolizado pelos Can ou Neu!.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Há profundidade de campo, um balanço insinuante que não se deixa  adormecer na mesma estrada, como se o condutor andasse em sentido  contrário, apesar de se sentir um discreto calor emocional.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;São temas instrumentais, com alguns apontamentos vocais, de  superfícies sonoras abstractas, mais preocupados em sugerir do que impor  seja o que for, feitos de impressões digitais e aragens aveludadas. Isso deixa a boa sensação de que Niagara não parecem preocupados em citar modelos clássicos (ou menos clássicos) de house ou techno, antes divertirem-se com soluções feitas no momento. Kraftwerk em “Todi” só são perceptíveis por quem é meio doente pela discografia deles nos anos 70 (er… nós e outros como nós). Muito do que se ouve aqui soa rude no sentido de parecer composto durante a gravação. In quest’album che esce per la portoghese Dromos accompagna il virtuoso pianista Thollem McDonas, attivo da anni nei circuiti ambiti jazz e sperimentali della Bay Area di San Francisco, per una serie di duetti dalla tensione forte e vivida per quanto sempre trattenuta, costretta, mai lasciata veramente libera di esplodere. I pezzi sono generalmente brevi e bozzettistici e centrati soprattutto sui movimenti dissimulatori ed estremamente diversificati di Thollem, che passa da chiari di luna debussyani a sparseness satiana, da gustosi cenni alla Monk a momenti più stralunati e sperimentali (Some Dancing People), fino a far apparire il suo strumento come fosse preparato (That’s Scary! To People). Da parte sua Dieterich pennella e disegna senza mai strafare se non occasionalmente (gliottimi crescendo di I’ll Keep Thinking e I Just Thought Give People), riservando accordi più aspri e acidi a pochi – ma molto incisivi – pezzi come That’s Scary! To People e Making A Report. La musica scorre con apparenza d’improvvisazione pur non avendone le caratteristiche più proprie&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: arial;"&gt;ed evidenti (si tratta di composizioni, anche se in formato haiku) ed è veramente un ottimo esercizio non di stile. Ed è un disco eccentrico per Mota perché la sua chitarra è molto distante dai consueti movimenti astratti e si muove lungo sentieri elettrici grintosi e scoscesi di wah wah introverso, cupo, colmo di risonanze e gravido di riflessi, mentre la batteria improvvisa fornendogli semplicemente una spalla d’appoggio. This is music that confronts you to a point that’s impossible to be indifferent. In my head, I, doubtless unfairly, would  have conjured up a phrase like, "the Iberian Sugimoto". Well, here, in  the company of drummer Simões, it's more like "The Portuguese Sharrock  or Capspar Brotzmann". He raises quite the squall in this freewheeling,  high-energy blowout. It's only about 25 minutes long and seems to cut  out while things are still going on. I can't say it's an approach that  holds much attraction for me, but if you've been aching for some  Fushitsusha-style flailing explosiveness, you could do worse. Here he,  along with Carrasco on alto and Kaplan on trumpet, play it soft and  borderline melodic all the way through. Much space, a nice array of  texture. Several lovely moments here, including one about 20 minutes in  where I was strongly reminded of Roscoe Mitchell's Sound Ensemble from  the early 80s (high praise). Again, it's a short disc, about 33 minutes,  but strong and well-paced throughout, definitely one to hear. This  release also has a great sleeve, folded origami like, as is the interior  tissue sleeve. Yet even though only a trio of instruments is involved on each – and Tokyo-based On-kyo guitarist Tetuzi Akiyama is present on two of the three CDs – the overall performances can readily be distinguished from one another.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;More obviously separate is Crackleknob, the collaboration among three New York-based players: guitarist Mary Halvorson, bassist Reuben Radding and trumpeter Nate Wooley. Each has worked with a cross-section of other progressive players including composer Anthony Braxton (Halvorson), pianist Denman Maroney (Radding) and cellist Daniel Levin (Wooley). Not only that, but Wooley has also recorded in the past with Leonel Kaplan, a trumpeter from Buenos Aires with similar understated tendencies, featured on Moments of Falling Petals.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;Kaplan’s associates on that disc are Akiyama, whose interests range across the electronic, improv and notated scenes, as well as Éden Carrasco, an alto saxophonist from Santiago. Akiyama – who plays a tape-delay electric guitar – is also on board for Rebuses, but his partners here are saxophonist and clarinetist Masahiko Okura from Tokyo, who plays with Japanese improvisers such as turntablist/guitarist Otomo Yoshihide; and Vienna’s quartet-tone trumpet specialist Franz Hautzinger whose playing partners range from synthesizer player Thomas Lehn to rock-styled ensembles.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;On Rebuses the emphasis is strictly minimalist. Brass timbres leak onto toy guitar-like twangs produced by slurred fingering, abut barely breathed peeps and disconnected note patterns from the saxophonist, and rest on an undertow of electronic flanges, spins and clatters. Throughout, Akiyama’s licks aren’t often wedded to folksy finger-picking but concentrate instead on ringing chords and slack key approximations, circling the others’ tones and constantly launching envelopes of dissonant patterns. More upfront here than elsewhere, the guitarist’s downward-cascading licks plus crackling amp distortions bring forth belligerent split tones or vulture-like cawing from the reedist.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;Occasionally Okura interrupts flat-line air expelling to complement with tongue slaps, fluttering squeals or rolling blows, the equally sporadic rubato squeaks from Hautzinger. For his part the trumpeter prefers tremolo grace notes which usually reflect back onto themselves. As well, in contrast to Akiyama’s divisive string rubs and chordal flanges, Hautzinger’s tongue-rolled air is connectively chromatic. Eventually collective note patterns shape the five long tracks into suite-like form.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;More precious and much shorter, Moments of Falling Petals, with Akiyama on acoustic guitar, consists of a single track improvisation which moves between silencers, gentling undulations and unexpected crunching eruptions. With Kaplan’s timbres initially centred on muted growls and Carrasco’s on peeps, squeals and chromatic slurs, only Akiyama’s coldly outlined notes cut through the undifferentiated sonic and silences. Eventually his snaps and strums are challenged by side-slipping shrills and bell-muted pressure from the saxophonist plus spittle-encrusted angled grace notes from the trumpeter. Following a climatic water dam-like roar from the horns, and a subsequent extended period of silence, the piece’s final variation is divided among whimpering pressure from Kaplan, which becomes louder and more atonal by the end; brassy spetrofluctuation from Carrasco; and microtonal slurred fingering from Akiyama – with a conclusive resonating twang.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;Moving north from Buenos Aires to Brooklyn, not only do Halvorson, Radding and Wooley run through 10 tunes in less than 48½ minutes, but each number also has a quirky title. The game plan here involves triple counterpoint with an emphasis on dissonant unison harmonies. Performances by this trio are as macro as the others are micro, without losing sight of post-modern minimalism that is mixed with jazz-styled improvisations.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;In this context at least, Halvorson’s output is spikier and louder than Akiyama’s. During the course of “Libidinous Objects &amp;amp; the Decay of Self”, for instance, she works herself from watery chromatic picking to distorted lines and finally into a display of scattered notes and slurred staccato fingering. Radding thickly thumps in response, while Wooley leaks the odd brass tone. Meanwhile, “In the Teeth of Ideology” serves as a showcase for the bassist, whose wood-splintering-like scrubs and col legno ruffs replace his usual thick stopping and walking. Stepping back to strum, the guitarist cedes the remaining space to Wooley, whose hushed output is simultaneously lyrical, wispy and Impressionistic.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;Elsewhere each seems to be vying to discover whose playing can be the most moderato and low-pressured. However an extended improv such as “Quavering Voices of the Mutilated” shows off their multi-directional counterpoint in greatest detail. With the broken chord action connected by Radding’s pumping lines, the guitarist moves from chunky rasgueado to spidery fingering while the trumpeter’s interpolations evolve from tremolo buzzing to sounds that are fortissimo, shrill, grainy and slurred. When this centrifugal performance climaxes, silences, delay and discursion eventually combine into lyrical connectivity.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;Although Crackleknob distinguishes itself from the other two sessions with a brash – perhaps New World-styled – forthrightness, each of the CDs demonstrate winning methods for enlivening trumpet-guitar trio sessions that simultaneously explore and evolve. Alinhado com os princípios do reducionismo improvisado (utilização de silêncios, economia de sons, volume reduzido, substituição do fraseado pela construção de texturas), numa pausa das recentes investidas do guitarrista pelos blues abstractos e pelo psicadelismo rock, o que aqui encontramos é de uma beleza desarmante. A guitarra, acústica, soa por vezes a uma harpa e outras a um violoncelo. Os sopros têm uma perspectivação electrónica, embora de forma orgânica e até primária, importando mais a respiração e o sopro do que a nota e a articulação.&lt;br /&gt;Ao longo da audição chegamos a recear que qualquer novo acontecimento destrua o mundo que foi construído, e é em constante surpresa que testemunhamos a capacidade dos três intervenientes para delicadamente o renovar. This could be a clue as to why I happen to find Akiyama such an intriguing musician – returning once again to the less-is-more world of Bar Aoyama and Off Site where he first made a name for himself, I'm struck by what I once described elsewhere (referring to an Arthur Doyle album, of all things) as "relaxed intensity". There were only two ways out of Off Site: either by playing even less – the Taku Sugimoto solution – or by playing more, which was Akiyama's strategy. (Toshi Nakamura can't decide which way to go, which is fine by me too..). There's an extraordinary tension to Sugimoto's work, both improvised and composed – I well recall him sweating, physically suffering to place those oh so few notes in just the right place in a concert with Radu Malfatti here a while back – while Akiyama in concert has never seemed to me to be in the throes of such an existential crisis. Can music be intense without necessarily being tense? I'd say it can, and Akiyama is a good example. Pursuing the comparison for a while, that Connors / Licht duo once more comes to mind, with Taku playing Connors, agonising over each sound, while Akiyama sits back (Licht positively slumps back) and lets the notes come – not that there are many more of them here than there used to be on echt Akiyama outings like Relator, or his wonderful duos with Jozef van Wissem, Proletarian Drift and Hymn for a Fallen Angel. There's a real sense of tonal – not in the traditional sense of course – interplay in this 33-minute piece, with Akiyama's delicate chordal threads and micro-melodies drawing Carrasco and Kaplan back into real pitch play (rare these days, that), which counterpoints their more "extended" techniques to great effect. It's glorious stuff, and strongly recommended. The record documents a concert of the trio, recorded live at Sala Azucena Carmona, Real Teatro in Córdoba, Argentina.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:arial;font-size:100%;"  &gt;Informed by the vast spectrum of  languages connected to the sphere of free improvisation and electroacoustic music, each of the musicians establishes a dialog with the other, creating, layer after layer,a plains of a rare evocative power, slowly sculpting the molecules of sound and space that propagate trough time until they reach a new and original form.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style=";font-family:arial;font-size:100%;"  &gt;Each cover is different and unique, and were all handmade and hand drawn by artist Joana Falhas.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;font-family:arial;font-size:78%;"  &gt;Cd-R comes in a limited edition of 250 copies.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:78%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;meta equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;
